Haydn Colgate - HD Mechanic, Tropicana
Haydn could have had a career as an engineer, however he chose a more hands on role as a heavy diesel mechanic. With a preference to build, test and make changes to equipment, Haydn is a natural born mechanic, following in his older brothers footsteps, completing a trade certificate as a Mobile Plant Mechanic.
Starting as an apprentice in Macmahon’s WAC Workshop in Perth, Haydn had many mentors in his first years including Apprentice Master, Mike Azzaro and Training Manager, Tiny Van Den Beld who helped him towards graduating from his four year apprenticeship. Whilst there are many mining companies offering apprenticeships, Haydn chose Macmahon. His older brother also worked for the company and recommended Macmahon as a great place to work.
“After my initial two years in Perth, I went to Telfer as part of the site rotation in the apprentice program. As most people know, Telfer is a challenging site but it provided me with a great learning opportunity,” said Haydn.
“I’ve now been at Tropicana for about 18 months and really enjoying the site and the new experiences and mates that I’ve made here. I’m fortunate enough to be selected to undertake additional learning in the form of CAT and Hitachi training which is invaluable as I develop and progress my career path.”
Haydn works a 2:1 roster and is focussed on saving money to buy a house. At 22, he’s using the opportunity to live at home while building his bank account and while he’s at it, he’s having fun too. “When I’m back in Perth, I’m either out in my ski boat with mates, either wakeboarding or skiing and if the weather’s not great, I’m out 4WDriving. “Life’s pretty good as FIFO HD Mechanic”.
